Roof ladder

A roof ladder is crucial to guarantee roof safety

The purpose of roof ladder is to avert accidents due to ladders sliding down or to the side and rocking ladders. More precisely, it is a suspended ladder with a ridge hook at the top which rests against the opposite side of a pitched roof. Moreover, bearers underneath the climbing face of the ladder support the ladder. This ensures a sufficient distance between the ladder and the roof. However, it cannot be used as a leaning ladder or bridge. Namely, ladders on roofs are designed for use on a sloping area and they must not be used on flat roofs or very steeply pitched roofs.

Ladders on the roof must be equipped with a CWL Safety System as well as a rail for the anchoring of personal fall protections. This rail system lets personnel to move along the entire length of the ladder without having to reconnect the safety line.

Working on a roof is risky. As a matter of fact, nearly one in five deaths in construction relate to roof work. Likewise, both homeowners and professional roofers fall to their deaths. Examples of accidents that can occur are falling from roof edges or openings, through fragile materials or roof lights. Also, any work at height is a risk. In other words, the importance of roof safety cannot be underestimated.

Before climbing a ladder, you should take into account other potential ways the job could be done without working at height. Similarly, you should think about other safer approaches to working on the roof. For example, elevated work platforms, boom lifts or scaffolding.

Access route requirements

The width of the walking surfaces shall always have a minimum width of 350 mm. The walking route must have free passage with a “shoulder width” of 700 mm (350 mm from the centre to the edge). An overhead clearance of 2.1 m should be the aim. Access hatches on horizontal surfaces and on pitches of up to 45 degrees shall be 700 x 900 mm.

Remember that

Access routes shall make it possible to bring the necessary personal fall protection equipment up and down from the roof.

Remember that you should have prepared a rescue plan before going up onto the roof. What do we do if someone is hanging out from the edge of the roof? How do we get a person hanging from the roof down? How do we get a person who has been injured on the roof down?
