Roof access hatch

A guardrail around the access hatch serves as a support/handrail for ascending/descending through the access hatch.

Access to the roof should be gained from inside the premises by means of an access hatch in most cases. At access heights with façade heights above 8 metres, this is the only alternative.

The access hatch can rest on horizontal roof surfaces and those leaning up to 45 degrees and is in that case called an Access hatch, roof. On roofs steeper than 45 degrees and on walls, it is called an Access hatch, wall.

Requirements on access hatches for roofs and walls

Access hatch for roofs and walls Roof hatches shall measure at least 700 x 900 mm. On pitches of more than 45 degrees, we recommend a wall access hatch measuring 700 x 2100 mm (however, at least 1200 mm). It must be possible to lock the hatch in an upright possession.

Guardrail around the access hatch serves as a support/handrail for ascending/descending through the access hatch.

The walkway or roof ladder must be in close connection with the access hatch. Maximum of 450 mm away, (step measurement maximum 600 mm).

If possible, arrange for a landing, for example, one walkway with a guardrail, below the access hatch to allow for safe and easy access.

Requirements on guardrails around an access hatch

The guardrail must satisfy the requirements set out in SS 831333:2014 These are 500 mm high and may serve as an anchor for personal fall protection.
